Importance of an Emergency Preparedness Plan
The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ campus is a complex entity of buildings, people and mechanical operations. The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Student Union is only one piece of this intricate maze of functions and management. For a successful daily function, the Student Union requires participation and cooperation of the entire facility/building community to successfully implement an Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP).
During certain emergency conditions, it may be necessary to evacuate the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Student Union. Examples of such occasions include: smoke/fire, gas leak, bomb threat, active shooter, biohazard incidents, and severe mechanical failure. Conversely, there are circumstances when staying put and creating a barrier between ourselves and potentially contaminated air outside or harsh winds, a process known as "shelter-in-place," is a matter of survival.
Pre-planning and rehearsal are effective ways to ensure that building occupants recognize an evacuation alarm, recognize the evacuation process and/or know how to respond. Practicing evacuation procedures during a non-emergency drill provides training that will be valuable in an emergency situation.
Evacuation Drills
Evacuation drills will be conducted at least once every academic year by the Student Union Facilities and Operations staff team and 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Department of Risk Management and Safety. These drills may be held at unexpected times and under varying conditions to simulate the unusual conditions that can occur should an evacuation be necessary. These drills may be obstructed (having various means of exit made temporarily unavailable) in order to familiarize occupants with secondary routes of evacuation.
Our Plan
Evacuation Rally Points
There are four evacuation rally points that SUES has designated in case of an emergency:
- North Rally Point: Alumni Amphitheater
- South Rally Point: Tonopah Lawn
- West Rally Point: Tonopah Lawn
- East Rally Point: Last row of Parking Lot D (closest to Maryland Parkway).
Plan Levels and Protocols
During an emergency, SUES will utilize three plan levels:
- Patrons
- Tenants/Employees working in the Building
- SUES and Other Employees who want to help
Protocol Plan for Patrons
- When you hear the alarm, evacuate as quickly as possible.
- Head to one of the rally points.
Protocol Plan for Tenants/Employees Working in the Building
- When you hear the alarm, gather your colleagues.
- Evacuate as quickly as possible.
- Head to one of the rally points.
- Conduct a headcount of your team/department.
Protocol Plan for SUES and Other Employees Who Want to Help
- When you hear the alarm, gather your colleagues.
- Evacuate as quickly as possible.
- Report to the Information Desk (Station 1) for your next assignment.
