Residence Hall Eligibility

Any student that wishes to reside in the Residence Halls must fulfill the following requirements.

  • Be enrolled in 6 credits
  • Have no overdue or past due balances on their My51ԹϺ account
  • Abide by university and the Office of Housing and Residential Life policies

Contract Cancellations

  • A resident may cancel their contract prior to commencing occupancy by submitting a Request for Contract Release Form to the Office of Housing & Residential Life. Notification by other means, including telephone calls, emails, or to other university offices will not be accepted and does not constitute a cancellation.
  • A contract will remain fully in effect unless and until written email approval is given by the Office of Housing & Residential Life in response to resident’s written request for contract cancellation.
  • Cancellation fees will be applied for all reasons except for non-enrollment.

Additionally, please note that microwave ovens are prohibited in student rooms. Communal microwaves are available in each complex and are cleaned daily.

Smoking Policy in 51ԹϺ Housing

  • Our university housing facilities follow the same smoking policies set forth by 51ԹϺ. For more information, read 51ԹϺ's Smoke-Free & Tobacco-Free Campus Policy.
  • Resident understands and acknowledges that under the Smoke-Free & Tobacco-Free Campus Policy, smoking, using electronic smoking devices (e.g., vape pens, e cigarettes, etc.), or using other tobacco products is prohibited in all spaces, including, but not limited to, rooms, balconies and entryways within Housing & Residential Life.
  • Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action as outlined in the Student Conduct Code.

Marijuana Policy

  • Our university housing facilities follow the same marijuana policies set forth by 51ԹϺ. For more information on 51ԹϺ’s marijuana policies, visit the University Statements and Compliance page.
  •  The use, possession, and/or cultivation of marijuana is therefore prohibited in 51ԹϺ housing facilities/Residence Halls on 51ԹϺ premises.

Room Furniture, Decoration, and Appliances

  • Residents may move the furniture around inside their assigned room as long as it is safe and in compliance with our policies.
  • Furniture must remain in the assigned room at all times. If you rearrange the furniture in your room, it should be returned to its original position prior to move-out.
  • Residents cannot install or affix anything in the room that will be permanent or will damage the walls, doors, ceilings, or floors.
  • Each resident can keep one refrigerator of approximately 3.2 cubic feet or less in the assigned room.
  • Microwave ovens are prohibited in student rooms. Communal microwaves are available in each complex and are cleaned daily.
  • Each residence hall includes laundry facilities:
    • At Dayton and UCC, the laundry rooms are on the first floor of each building.
    • At Tonopah, laundry rooms are located on each floor.
    • At South, the laundry room is located in the adjacent building, South Services.

Room and Roommate Assignments

  • Residents will be able to select their room each year in June after they have applied for housing. Students who do not have a roommate will be able to choose a space for themselves only. For more information, visit the First-Time Housing Applicants or Returning Residents page.
  • You may occupy only your assigned space in the room at all times.
  • Unless you occupy a single room and pay the single rate, you may be assigned a roommate at any time, so your room must always be ready for a new roommate.
    • The Office of Housing & Residential Life tries to provide 24 hours of notice before a roommate moves in but is not always able to do so. Failure to have your room “roommate-ready” may result in billing for staff to clean or move your belongings

Guests Policy

  • Residents may invite guests into their residence hall, understanding that the host resident must escort the guests wherever they are in the building.
  • Guests are allowed within the resident’s room only with the roommate’s continuing consent. If all roommates consent, guests may stay in a residence hall overnight for up to three nights per month (adding together nights in any rooms on campus).
  • Residents of one residence hall are considered guests in all other residence halls and therefore must follow guest procedures when visiting.
  • Guests must adhere to all university rules and residence hall policies. The host resident is responsible for the guest’s actions (both financially and for disciplinary action) and must inform the guest of these rules. In certain cases, a guest may be removed from the residence hall and prohibited from returning.

Insurance for Personal Belongings

  • The Office of Housing & Residential Life does not assume responsibility for any resident’s or other person’s loss of money or valuables, for loss of or damage to property, or for injuries sustained on the premises. 51ԹϺ recommends that all residents obtain renter’s insurance.
  • In the event of water damage, fire, theft, or any other cause of damage or loss, 51ԹϺ insurance will not cover any of your personal possessions. It is strongly recommended that you purchase renter’s insurance through your own insurance provider to cover the loss of or damage to your personal property while on campus. Be sure to consider the value of your possessions, including computers and electronic equipment, when selecting the policy that’s best for you.

Storage Space

51ԹϺ is not able to provide additional storage space outside your assigned room. It is the resident’s responsibility for finding the proper storage arrangements when the spring semester ends.

Abandoned Property Process

  • After a resident moves out of their room, the room is inspected thoroughly for any items left behind. Housing personnel will document, bag, tag, and relocate anything found in the room. We will contact the resident to arrange for any claim and collection of the items within 30 days before they are removed from the residence halls.
  • Residents who have left personal property in the room or anywhere else within the Residence Halls may be subject to additional storage fees.
  • If the resident does not contact their Residential Life Coordinator within thirty days, University may donate or otherwise dispose of such property without liability.

Liability for Existing Damage

During move in, you will sign the Room Condition Report (RCR). This is your opportunity to note anything in your room that is in less-than-perfect condition. You can accept the condition of your room, or you will have 24 hours to report any discrepancies with your RCR. Please take the time to thoroughly review the RCR before you turn it into your resident assistant, as changes beyond normal wear and tear will become your financial responsibility.
