The Clark County School District is expecting about 10,000 fewer students this year than last school year, which would mark the sixth consecutive enrollment decline.

Going into the 2022-23 year, CCSD has nearly 1,400 teacher openings. Since then, human resources has hired another recruiter, bringing the team up to six people; enlisted principals to help market their campuses and join recruiting trips around the country; expanded the district’s foreign teacher visa program by about 100 more international teachers; and graduated two cohorts of support staffers who want to become full-time licensed teachers through a program with 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ.

When does school start? It's not such a simple question for students and parents around the country. While many U.S. schools embrace a 180-day academic calendar, the first day of classes at K-12 districts can stretch from mid-July to early September, depending on the city or state, climate or even whether teachers and students are at risk for burnout.

We know that teenagers who experience foster care face adverse experiences across multiple domains, such as housing, juvenile incarceration and in schooling. Throughout history, we can see that they are more likely to experience adverse outcomes indicative of economic hardship: adult poverty, homelessness, unemployment and underemployment, and low rates of educational attainment. To combat these outcomes, many seek higher education.

But then she felt the pull of reasons to keep them in remote learning.
