Medical Benefits
Health Insurance for all employees who are in benefits eligible positions:
All benefits eligible employees are provided information on how to accept or decline health insurance within their first 30 days of employment through the Public Employee Benefit Program (PEBP). There are several different plans to select from, including choice of medical, dental, vision and term life insurance. Voluntary Benefits
Benefit eligible employees are also able to enroll in a variety of voluntary benefit programs that are in addition to your regular health insurance premium. Enrollment with Public Employee Benefits Program (PEBP) health insurance is not required to enroll in any of these products.

Making Changes to Selected Benefit Plans
For all employees, changes to selected benefit plans (such as switching to HMO/PPO/EPO option, adding or removing a plan, adding or removing a dependent) can only be made during open enrollment which happens annually in May.
To make changes outside of open enrollment, you must have a qualifying event.
To view the list of qualifying events that allow employees to add or remove a dependent, please view the Nevada Public Employees' Benefits Program’s (PEBP) .
Medical residents can add or remove dependents by logging into Workday via the benefits worklet within 30 days of the qualifying life event. All other employees can add or remove dependents by logging into the within 60 days of the qualifying event.

Retirement
Plan Eligibility
- All university employees are required to participate in a retirement plan in lieu of Social Security.
- Academic faculty and administrative/professional employees working at least half-time must participate in the Nevada System of Higher Education Retirement Plan Alternative (NSHE RPA) unless they are already members of the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada (NVPERS) when they are hired at the university.
- Classified employees contribute to a pension plan through the .
- Medical residents are required to participate in a mandatory 403(b) retirement plan.
- Part-time instructors, letter of appointment, seasonal, temporary, and casual employees do not participate in the university’s mandatory retirement plan but are required to participate in an alternative plan.
Medical Coverage
Retired faculty (65 years or older) should sign up for Medicare because they cannot be a member of the Public Employee Benefit Plan Insurance Group. Employees may continue on 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ insurance coverage but at a cost. The cost is determined by the coverage required and the number of years of service by the employee. Contact the to discuss options and complete the appropriate forms.
Grant-in-Aid
Grant-in-Aid (GIA) is a program that provides 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ employees with opportunities to grow professionally and personally through educational discount programs. These programs are for specific employee types and their family members. Any amount of tuition not covered by GIA is the sole responsibility of the individual enrolled.
Eligibility
- Academic and administrative faculty who are .50 FTE or greater are eligible for GIA assistance up to the maximum allowed credits. Their dependents are eligible for educational assistance through the program as well.
- Classified staff are also eligible for GIA assistance up to the maximum allowed credits. Their dependents are eligible for tuition assistance through the Staff Enrichment Award.
- Part-Time employees are eligible to receive educational assistance through the GIA program. This benefit applies only to the employee, not their spouse or dependents. For non-teaching part-time employees, the number of credits is determined by the FTE, while the maximum number of credits for instructors is based on the number of teaching credit hours.
- Retired faculty and professional employees may continue to receive grant-in-aid if they retire at the age of 55 or over and have a minimum of 20 years of service. Their dependents are eligible for educational assistance through the program.

Workers Compensation
What To Do When Injured On The Job
Employees of the Nevada System of Higher Education are covered under workers’ compensation insurance in the event of a workplace injury or illness. 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s workers’ compensation program is administered through the University’s Risk Management and Safety Department.

The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Campus Absence Management Coordinator provides assistance and administers leaves of absences for 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ employees. The leave of absence programs include paid and unpaid leave for a variety of reasons.
Employees should notify their supervisor of the need to request leave 30 days in advance, when feasible.
