Biography

Dr. Kate Martin is a board-certified family physician and Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, where she serves as the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and the institution’s Designated Institutional Official (DIO). A native of Southern Nevada, Dr. Martin has dedicated her career to building inclusive, community-responsive medical education programs that strengthen the healthcare workforce and improve care for underserved populations.

Dr. Martin brings over two decades of leadership in academic medicine, including prior roles as family medicine residency director, clerkship director, and director of community engagement. Under her leadership, the school’s graduate medical education (GME) portfolio has expanded significantly, supported by over $8 million in grant funding for new and expanded residency and fellowship programs. These include hematology/oncology, rheumatology, geriatrics, forensic psychiatry, and critical care medicine, among others.

A nationally recognized advocate for disability inclusion, Dr. Martin has developed educational programs, clinical initiatives, and policy efforts that advance health equity for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). She served as clinical director for Special Olympics MedFest and co-developed the Clinical Health Assessment & Promotion Program (CHaPP) at Opportunity Village, bringing preventive services directly to adults with IDD in Nevada. Her scholarly work includes a scoping review on care coordination for adults with IDD and the design of a machine learning–based system to enhance communication for individuals at the intersection of aging and disability.

Dr. Martin holds four master’s degrees — in instructional design, public health, gerontology, and healthcare administration — and earned her MD from the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a frequent presenter at national and regional meetings on inclusive medical education and health promotion for vulnerable populations.

At 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, Dr. Martin chairs the Graduate Medical Education Committee and advises curricular initiatives that foster innovation, interprofessional collaboration, and reflective practice. She also serves as a mentor to medical students, residents, and junior faculty pursuing scholarship and service in community-engaged health care.
