"Issues Regarding the Effectiveness of Psychotherapy for Children and Adolescents: Time to Move On" will be the topic when 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ professor Christopher Kearney speaks at the university April 13.
Kearney, an assistant professor of psychology, will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Classroom Building Complex, auditorium A-110. Part of the University Forum lecture series, his presentation is open to the public free of charge.
Kearney plans to discuss the challenges that therapists face in providing treatment to children. Among the challenges are analyzing why some existing forms of treatment are not effective when dealing with minorities and then finding ways to make those treatments more effective by making them more culturally sensitive, he said.
Another challenge is determining why some people do not bring children in for treatment, even when such treatment is indicated.
The impact that managed health care will have on successful psychotherapy treatment also is an issue facing therapists, he said.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and underwritten by the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ provost's office. Kearney's presentation also is sponsored by the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Foundation.
