An immigrant and a first-generation student, Mey Mey Heng plans to study biology on her way to practicing medicine. She credits the encouragement of a wide network — from family members to teachers to members of her community — with inspiring her to go to college.

Biggest fear?
My biggest fear is just personal — about being an adult and in the 'real' world. You never know what could happen.
Biggest challenge in getting here?
My biggest challenge was immigrating to America in fifth grade — away from my parents and knowing none of the language. I’m kind of grateful for that, though. I am able to be the person I am today.
Something about yourself that few people know.
On the outside, I am always so cheery but in reality I work really hard to get where I am. I’ve had struggles just like others have.
How will getting your degree affect your family?
I definitely want to inspire my siblings and help open those doors for them. Education makes a difference in communities. I want to give back to my community and help my family have a better future.
