As a 2020 grad with a bachelor's in graphic design and media, Vivien Hau didn't have to look far and wide to find her first job out of college. After joining 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Integrated Marketing & Branding as a sophomore, she continued on with the web and digital strategy team full-time after commencement.
A native Las Vegan, Hau oversees the degree directory database for the department to ensure all information is accurate, accessible, and meets accreditation requirements. She also plays a mean piano when it comes time to tickle the ivories and play video game music.
How did you choose 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ when you were looking at schools?
Most of my cousins have graduated from 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ and I have heard about their experiences studying here. I figured it would be convenient and affordable for me and my family if I stayed in Vegas so I felt like it was a good choice to go with 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ.
What class really helped set you on your path?
Design Media Studio III with JungYun Son. The course focused on creating a brand identity for a fictional company (mine was for a nonprofit animal shelter organization). I learned so much about the process of building a brand from the logo to graphics, product packaging, and website design.
What made you want to work at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ after graduation?
Working here has given me opportunities to learn more about web design and development. It aligns with my career goals and growth as a professional. I’m lucky enough to work with an amazing team so I want to contribute a bigger role in consistently improving the 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s website.
What do you want to work toward in your career?
I would love to learn more about accessibility and user interface and user experience design. I did my capstone project on raising awareness of web accessibility and I realize the importance of it. The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ website is a reflection of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ and everything it stands for. By making sure our website is accessible, we can provide a better user experience for everyone.
You're called on to be in a talent show next week: what are you doing on stage?
Either playing the violin or piano. I did orchestra throughout middle school and then transitioned to learning and playing the piano during high school for four years. I’m an avid video gamer and anime watcher, so I would most likely play songs from my favorite show or game.
What has been the biggest surprise about making the transition to 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ employee after having been a student?
The biggest surprise was when faculty members and clients emailed to congratulate me on the transition to a full-time employee. They’ve recognized me for my work ethic as a student worker and express their gratitude and appreciation. It was very welcoming to see everyone, especially the web team, be supportive.
It's getting close to Halloween. What's your favorite scary movie?
I’m easily frightened by jump scares so I rarely watch scary movies. However, I have a few favorites such as the Japanese film Confessions, Korean zombie movie Train to Busan, and Get Out. I love the psychological thriller elements of storytelling and character development.
