An-Pyng Sun (Social Work), together with Tracy Liu and Avi Ramprashad (both from University of Maryland, School of Medicine), wrote an article, "Methamphetamine-Associated Psychosis: Its Nature and Management," which appeared in the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Specialty Practice Section 2024 Fall/Winter Newsletter. This article emphasizes the importance of methamphetamine (meth) use problems, which might be overshadowed by the recent national attention on opioid use/overdose. The article delineates the severe negative medical, psychological, and behavioral consequences, including violence toward oneself or others. Meth use alone can bring about violent behaviors; meth-induced psychosis (MIP) further increases such odds. This article discusses the nature, symptoms, and types of MIP, as well as the risk factors involved, and the management and treatment of meth-associated psychosis.
