Leanne Soter and Stine Odegard (both Service Learning and Leadership) presented "Keeping Leadership Education Out of 'the Sunken Place': Doing Better as Leadership Educators" at the 4th annual Women and Leadership Conference, "Building Solutions, Harmony and the Greater Good." The conference was hosted by the International Leadership Association. Their session invited attendees to explore how dominant identities, reliance on hegemonic theories/models, and familiar teaching practices might push marginalized students into “the Sunken Place” — a place where students are forced into submission and silence, into separating their social identities from their leader identity. This workshop used adaptive leadership and culturally relevant leadership learning to reflect on current practices and contemplate strategies to drop the metaphorical teaspoon.
