Gérard Beck (Word Languages and Cultures) organized and coordinated a week-long professional workshop at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ in May in partnership with the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Chamber of Commerce in Paris. Designed to develop courses and official certifications in French for business and tourism, this workshop welcomed 20 professors from prestigious universities and institutions throughout the United States, including Cornell, Princeton, University of Chicago, and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. Beck’s participation in the workshop will help 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ become the first university in Nevada to be accredited by the Chamber of Commerce in Paris to teach French for business and tourism. It also will help 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ students get an edge on the job market by allowing them to take the diplôme de français professionnel, an international language competency exam recognized by more than 800,000 French and francophone companies throughout the world.
