Eileen Medinger (Educational Outreach) will present "The Thread to the Unknown. The Chess Game: Sculpture as a Research Methodology" at the third International Conference on the Image" in Poznan, Poland in September. Because mythology and metaphor are not scientifically provable, they are dismissed. This view is alienating, as scientific rationalism has failed to offer any connections or sense of belonging to a larger pattern. These ideas open the possibility for alternative research, a methodology to approach the unknown. She will present an alternative research into the archetypes and metaphors presented in the chess game. She also will describe her process of creating a series of sculptures, each one created based on the knowledge and insights provided by the work that preceded it. By describing and reflecting on what was created, she came to understand ideas, which were new to her but universal in their meaning.
