The Kerestesi Center for Insurance and Risk Management unveiled a powerful new tradition: the Kerestesi Center Legacy Awards. Beginning this year, the Center will annually recognize up to five individuals, programs, institutions, or businesses whose contributions meaningfully advance its mission to elevate insurance and risk management education, experiential learning, and student opportunity.
This year’s inaugural Legacy Award honorees embody the values, leadership, and vision that fuel the Kerestesi Center’s work.
Philadelphia Insurance Companies received one of this year’s Legacy Awards for its unwavering commitment to the next generation of insurance professionals. PHLY’s $100,000 investment in the center — directed entirely toward experiential learning — has created life-changing opportunities for 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ students to connect with the industry and prepare for meaningful careers.
David Ferderer, assistant vice president at PHLY and a valued friend of the center, accepted the award on behalf of the company.
Thomas F. Kerestesi, for whom the center is named, was recognized for the legacy of leadership, generosity, and vision he has passed on to the insurance community. His name not only anchors the Center but serves as a guiding force behind its purpose and ambition.
Chris Utterback, the center’s inaugural director, was honored for his foundational leadership in building the Kerestesi Center from the ground up. His drive and dedication helped establish the framework that now supports student scholarships, employer partnerships, and the launch of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s newest major.
James Sarmiento, vice president of External Affairs for 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s Gamma Iota Sigma chapter, received the Legacy Award for his exceptional student leadership. Through relentless outreach and authentic advocacy, James has become one of the most influential champions of the new Insurance and Risk Management major, ensuring business students across campus understand the value of this emerging pathway.
These recipients, each in their own way, have left an indelible mark on the center’s history — and on its future. Their contributions are not only worthy of recognition; they are worth remembering.
The Kerestesi Center Legacy Awards are intended to honor exactly that: lasting impact, meaningful advancement of the Center’s mission, and a shared belief in the power of education to shape a stronger, more inclusive insurance and risk management industry.
