Description
Estevan Rael-Gálvez, Ph.D., is executive director of Native Bound Unbound: Archive of Indigenous Slavery, an initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation, leading a global team to document Indigenous slavery across the Americas. Trained as an anthropologist, historian, and scholar of slavery, Rael-Gálvez has served as senior vice president at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, executive director of the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and state historian of New Mexico. A native son of New Mexico, Rael-Gálvez was raised on a farm and ranch stewarded by his family for generations. He received his BA in English Literature and Ethnic Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and his MA and Ph.D. in American Cultures from the University of Michigan.
Rael-Gálvez will detail the digital repository that he is creating centered on the lives of enslaved Indigenous people across the Americas. He’ll explain how descendants, educators, scholars, artists, and storytellers can use the collection, and show how it holds potential for transcendence and healing.
Reception with light refreshments to follow.
