Construction on the stairs near the Performing Arts Center and The Flashlight sculpture will take place July 15 through January 2026. Crews will begin fencing off the construction area and posting signage on July 7

Once complete, the project will bring much-needed updates to this area of campus, including an ADA-accessible ramp leading from the Performing Arts Center Plaza to the Academic Mall, seating, improved lighting, updated signage, and landscaping.

During construction, please be aware of the following impacts:

Closures and Detours

  • The stairs leading to the Performing Arts Center from the Academic Mall will be closed.
  • The pedestrian walkway immediately adjacent to the project will be closed.
    • Signage will be posted to direct pedestrians around the construction zone. 
  • The main entrances of Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall (HCH) and Judy Bayley Theatre (JBT) will be accessible from the north side of the Performing Arts Center Plaza only.
  • Cottage Grove Parking Garage and the Foundation Building (FDN) will be accessible via the walkway between the Thomas Beam Engineering Complex (TBE) and the Advanced Engineering Building (AEB).
  • Pedestrians will be directed to access the entrances to Lee and Thomas Beam Music Center (BMC) and Alta Ham Fine Arts (HFA) by going around the fenced off area. 

Construction Timeline and Impacts

Construction activities will occur between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m.. Please note that these times are subject to change. During construction please anticipate the following in the nearby area:

  • Construction vehicles entering and exiting the site between BMC and HFA
  • Noise from heavy machinery
  • Dust

Please note that no parking impacts are expected.
